Covid-19 Antiviral Treatment

Treatments are available for those the NHS considers at highest risk of developing severe COVID-19.

Detailed information for patients can be found here

Patients will no longer be automatically contacted by the NHS about treatments after reporting a positive Covid-19 test result because the National digital system is no longer active.

From 27 June 2023, patients potentially eligible for treatment will be able to access the service locally through their GP practice in the first instance who will then refer the patient to the Covid Medicine Delivery Unit (CMDU) service for assessment.

Outside of GP opening times, patients can contact NHS 111 for referral. If patients are unable to reach their local GP, they can contact their hospital specialist, if they have one.

If they are eligible for treatment, the CMDU will assess the patient and if treatment is required, will prescribe a course of antivirals, or arrange for the patient to come in for the infusion.

Patients who are assessed as not eligible will be informed of this by the CMDU triage service.

COVID tests
From 6 November 2023, patients eligible for Covid-19 treatment can collect free rapid lateral flow tests from your local pharmacy. Your pharmacy may ask you about your medical history to confirm that you are eligible for free tests.

What are the Treatments Available?

  • Antiviral: Antiviral medications inhibit viral replication and prevent progression of infection.
  • Neutralising Monoclonal Antibodies (nMABs): nMABS are synthetic monoclonal antibodies that bind to the spike protein of the Covid virus, which prevents entry into the host cell and replication.

WHERE will they be used?
A CMDU Service has been set up in two GP practices within BNSSG (Mendip Vale Medical Practice and Concord Medical Centre). A clinical assessment team within these GP practices will screen and review patients for their suitability for specialist COVID treatments. These two practices also have an Infusion Unit where they can administer the antiviral or nMAB via an intravenous infusion for the treatment of COVID-19 if most appropriate choice for the patient.

  • Personalised treatment plans, including physiotherapy exercises, manual therapy, and lifestyle guidance
  • Advice on pain management and injury prevention
  • Referrals to other healthcare professionals if further investigation or specialist care is needed

Since 2019, our partnership with Purse Physiotherapy has ensured that patients receive high-quality, expert care from skilled physiotherapists, helping them return to daily activities and improve overall wellbeing.

Group Consultations

A group consultation is a session where people with similar health needs meet together with an expert clinician and a trained facilitator. It gives you more time with your healthcare team, and you will still receive personalised medical advice during the session.

Why are we offering group consultations?

We want to improve your experience of care and make clinical reviews more helpful, informative, and accessible. Group consultations allow us to

  • Offer longer appointment times
  • Provide more in-depth education about management of your condition
  • Share up-to-date advice on medications
  • Create opportunities to learn from others’ questions and experiences

Benefits of Group Consultations for you

  • More time with expert clinicians (usually 60–90 minutes) for discussion and questions in a relaxed, supportive environment.
  • A chance to hear practical tips, experiences, and approaches that may help you.
  • Improved confidence and understanding of your health and treatment.
  • Support from others who have similar conditions or challenges.

How will our Group Consultations work?

  • We will run both face to face and virtual (online) group consultations. You will have the opportunity to book into either depending on availability

What to Expect on the Day

  • You will be welcomed by a facilitator and checked in – please arrive on time.
  • Any paperwork will be completed before the session begins.
  • The facilitator will guide the group discussion and make sure everyone is included.
  • You can contribute as much or as little as you feel comfortable, our trained facilitators will ensure everyone has the opportunity to contribute and ask questions.
  • General health information will be discussed that is relevant to everyone in the room.

Confidentiality and Your Comfort

  • Everyone will sign an agreement to keep each other’s information private and respect confidentiality.
  • You do not have to share anything personal unless you choose to.
  • If you have something sensitive to discuss, you can request a private conversation during or after the session, or you can also request an individual appointment later if you prefer.

Your Choice

  • Attending a group consultation is voluntary, and you can leave the session at any time. You may choose a standard one‑to‑one appointment instead. If you are invited to attend a group consultation, we strongly encourage you to take part and experience the benefits for yourself.

How to Prepare

  • Bring any questions you want to ask and bring a list of your current medications (if relevant).

If you have any questions before your appointment, please contact the practice team. Our facilitators will be happy to answer any questions or concerns you have.

Health Care Assistants (HCAs)
