Test Results

How and when to obtain test results from the surgery

Getting your test results

Results for tests that your GP has requested are usually available after one week. X-rays, scans, smear tests and certain bloods will table longer.

It is important that you remember to check your test results. We will, of course, make every effort to contact you should your returned result need urgent action. However, it is your responsibility in all cases to find out the result of your test.

If the doctor needs to speak to you personally, our care navigation team will help arrange this which may take the form of a telephone appointment.

Please telephone after 11am to obtain details of your test results as this is when telephone lines are quieter. To maintain confidentiality, test results will be given to the patient and not to relatives or friends, unless alternative arrangements have been agreed in writing.

Our doctors are increasing the use of text messaging and if we have your mobile number, in certain circumstances they are able to send you an individual text about your results at the time of their review.

Our care navigators are only able to state if the result is normal or that you will have to see the doctor. They are unable to relay any other information regarding test result.

If tests are ordered by hospital specialists (not by your GP) then the results will be given to you by the hospital. If you have any questions regarding hospital test results please contact the specialist, not your GP. Only the specialist will be able to tell you what the result means for your care and treatment.
